Он вырывает бродячего песика из лап огромных собак, накинувшихся на его косточку. Отныне песик становится его верным и благодарным спутником. Чарли дает ему кличку Объедок. Чарли крадет продукты у бродячего торговца, затем приходит на танцы. Его выставляют оттуда из-за собаки. Он прячет пса в штанину и возвращается в танц-клуб; хвост Объедка через дырку в штанине несколько раз стучит по большому барабану. Молодая певица Эдна исполняет грустную песню и доводит до слез слушателей и слушательниц. После выступления хозяин советует ей улыбнуться, чтобы посетители смогли вернуться к трапезе. Хозяин клуба увольняет Эдну, потому что она не желает работать танцовщицей. Вдобавок она повздорила с клиентом. Эдна садится за стол и рыдает. Чарли засыпает в привычном месте, подложив под голову Объедка вместо подушки. Пес откапывает кошелек. Чарли приходит клуб и утешает Эдну, показывая ей свое богатство. Но вор отнимает у него деньги. И снова Чарли выкидывает на улицу вышибала. Ничуть не теряя присутствия духа, он возвращается тайком и хитростью заполучает деньги обратно, оглушив воров и забрав деньги из их рук. Но те быстро приходят в чувство и гонятся за Чарли: тот находит спасение в лавке. Воры стреляют по Чарли, как в тире. Прибегают полицейские. Объедок выносит с поля боя кошелек, ухватив его зубами. Чарли исполняет свою мечту: он работает за городом, в полях, в райской идиллии. Эдна ждет его на ферме: она приготовила ему сытный обед. Вдвоем они умиленно глядят на колыбельку, где резвятся щенки Объедка.► Для Жана Митри, автора книги «Весь Чарли» (Jean Mitry. Tout Charlot, Seghers, 1972), Собачья жизнь после Бродяги, The Vagabond, 1916 становится «2-м решительным поворотом в судьбе Чаплина и, конечно же, в судьбе Чарли… Здесь уже присутствует трагический образ одинокого, несчастного человека, тщетно пытающегося сразиться со злым роком». Для Луи Деллюка «эта сказка, этот фильм, этот плач - 1-е совершенное произведение искусства в кинематографе» (Louis Delluc, Charlot, 1921; текст перепечатан в «Ecrits cinematographiques I», Cinematheque Francaise, 1985). Деллюк также писал: «Собачья жизнь становится для Чаплина началом новой откровенности» (статья, написанная в 1918 г. для журнала «Le Film» и включенная в сборник Деллюка «Тексты II» [«Ecrits II»]). В самом деле, фильм предлагает зрителю не только умело выстроенное повествование в лучших традициях Чаплина, но серию свободных, отчетливо автобиографических вариаций на темы голода, холода, одиночества, отверженности, дружбы с животным (собака, подобно мальчику в Малыше, The Kid, снятом 3 годами позже, здесь становится двойником Чарли, его товарищем по несчастью) и даже зарождения любви. Подобная серьезная смысловая нагрузка, признаваемая критиками за фильмом, совершенно не ограничивает его комедийных или хореографических достоинств. Что касается хореографии, обратите внимание на игру в прятки с полицейским на пустыре или же сцену в бюро по трудоустройству, где Чарли носится по всему помещению, но каждый раз оказывается в очереди 2-м. Для Чаплина несчастье вызывает смех, к тому же - и это немаловажный элемент - его можно станцевать. Счастливому и даже сказочному финалу не удается полностью устранить грусть и жесткость фильма. По правде говоря, этот финал так сильно похож на сон, что поверить в него невозможно.
